Liberty Run Golden Retrievers Farm and Facilities

Liberty Run Golden Retrievers is a fully licensed dog kennel in the State of Maryland.  That means we are inspected annually by the Humane Society.  We own our breeding Golden Retrievers, and they reside here on our farm with us.  If you visit, you will find no more than ten adult Golden Retrievers.   In some rare instances, parents of our Golden Retriever Puppies don't live here because they are owned by good friends of ours.

Liberty Run Goldens is dedicated to improving the Golden Retriever breed. Intentions aside, it takes adequate facilities to accomplish such a mission. Sure, we could have stuffed our goldens in crates and confined them to a basement in some suburban home, but we took a different approach. Instead, we moved to southern Carroll County, Maryland -- an area populated by farms and tractors, not homes and mini-vans. Sure, it's not close to malls, but we have ponds and fields right outside our back door. It's like having a Golden "test track" right in our back yard. Because we run, swim, and train our dogs, we know they are well balanced, healthy, and happy -- ideal candidates for producing healthy, smart and confident puppies.

We knew when we first moved into our home that it needed many repairs. It had been neglected for so long. And we knew when beginning to breed Goldens that it was a breed plagued with health problems. In the same way that we have successfully renovated our home, we strive to improve the Golden Retriever breed. The renovations to buildings can easily be seen by viewing "before" and "after" photos. Also easy to observe is the quality of our puppies. Just take a look at what families have to say about our puppies -- visit our Testimonials page.

Everette poses for a picture while constructing our Golden Retriever Kennel Building

Everett takes a break while building Liberty Run's newest building.

Our most recent building was designed and engineered by Patrick. The tough part of the project, building the structure, was lead by Everett Garey who is pictured at left. He was helped by Mike, Greg, Patrick, Ruth, and Phil -- (thanks guys!).

The building is 20 feet deep and 50 feet long, and its basic design is a canopy. Its main function is to keep the rain and snow off of our Goldens who live outside, year round. Many find it amazing that our Goldens live outside. We hear questions like, "how do they survive the cold?" every now and then. But we remind people that no dog has ever built a house and installed central heating and air-conditioning. Another reason we keep the Goldens outside is to demonstrate their health. We feel that a dog incapable of surviving outdoors is one that should not be bred. The final reason our Goldens stay outside is because they prefer it! And it shows because visitors always say our dogs look healthier than others.

You may think that a puppy born on a quiet, ol' farm would be incapable of surviving in your environment. This is far from true! Here at Liberty Run, we go to a great extent to socialize our pups. They never flinch at the sound of loud farm equipment, our Harley motorcycles, or even thunderstorms. We surround our puppies with many different people, too. Young and not-so-young (like Patton). Most importantly, though, we do not permit our puppies to "bond" with us.  That way, your puppy can bond with you.

There's another benefit to a puppy that has been raised outdoors. Many who purchase puppies from us find this helps in house-breaking. How? Because our puppies never had the opportunity to make a "mistake" indoors. All they have ever known is to relieve themselves outside. As a result, most of our pups are house-broken in less than three days.

Does this mean a Liberty Run puppy will need to live outside the rest of his or her life because it was raised outside? Hardly! Our pups are really smart. They adapt quickly to new and comfortable environments. They love to lead the life of couch potatoes.
